80% of girls in India have to face beauty biases right from their teenage years.
3 out of 4 Indian women are rejected for their looks during the arranged marriage process. This is a telling matrimonial statistic.
In 2020, 5 real women Mahak, Noor, Rajeshwari, Hemali & Deeksha came forward to share their story to the world. We thank these women for their bravery.

I have grown up feeling different from other kids in my school because of my curly hair. “Bhook lagi hai, noodles khaate hain,” they would often say. By the age of 23-24, I was getting proposals. Nobody else in my family has curly hair. And the subject of hair would always come up during meetings. The guy after a couple of meetings would jokingly say, “You must be adopted. “Or the guy’s mother would ask me if my curls were real - Hemali. It's devastating to see curly hair messing up someone's entire life. At Dove, we believe beauty comes in all forms. We urge people to look beyond hair stereotypes and embrace a whole new world of beauty. Dove. #StopTheBeautyTest |
I was a chubby kid. Everyone used to say, "Lose weight now, or else later you might have to face problems." Even though they would say (it) with concern, it would pinch me, why did they need to point out this issue. I have been fat-shamed by my classmates. At that age, you are already insecure about yourself. So, I found it harder to make friends - Mahak. It's devastating to see body size weighing someone down all their lives. At Dove, we believe beauty comes in all sizes. We urge people to look beyond slim and embrace a whole new world of beauty. Dove. #StopTheBeautyTest |

I remember, as a 4 or 5-year-old, I was playing when I overheard a friend of my dad’s telling him to seek treatment for me. “Ajeeb dikhti hai, badi hoke aur zyada... shaadi nahi hogi." In school, I remember older students used to come to play with us, however, nobody would play with me. Later on, my mother has had a difficult time as she (was) worried about my marriage as people used to ask her about it. The first proposal I received for marriage came through a relative. The boy’s mom told me she would like it if I got my birthmark removed after marriage - Deeksha. It's devastating to see a birthmark leave such a horrifying mark in someone's life. At Dove, we believe there is no one face to beauty. We urge people to look beyond beauty stereotypes and embrace a whole new world of beauty. Dove. #StopTheBeautyTest |

When you play sports, you get tanned. And my tan just wouldn’t fade. I always had issues with people telling me I had gotten darker. They would suggest natural remedies such as curd, turmeric, milk, etc. In South India, especially when a girl hits puberty, you have a lot of celebrations. When I hit puberty, it was a big deal. My dad is on the darker side, my mom is quite fair. People used to often tell me, "If only you had taken after your mom instead of dad." I heard this very often - Noor. It's devastating to see skin colour leading to such unfair treatment all your life. At Dove, we believe beauty comes in all shades. We urge people to look beyond skin colour and embrace a whole new world of beauty. Dove. #StopTheBeautyTest |
Chotu, 4’9 Kotiyani. I have had people refer to me by my height right since childhood. As I grew older, it only got worse, with people asking me, "How old I was, and whether I really had finished my degree." While I have a very supportive family, sometimes people my grand mom's age would say, "Ladka nai milega." I have realized that this is probably true. Men want to date you, but not marry you. They don’t want their wife to look like a kid. Photo achi nai aayegi. - Rajeshwari. It's devastating to see one small feature like height overshadow someone's entire life. At Dove, we believe beauty comes in all sizes. We urge people to rise above height and embrace a whole new world of beauty. Dove. #StopTheBeautyTest |
